About Us & Contact

Hi! We are the editorial team of Usva, a committee of seven student members, residing in Groningen but from all over Europe. We all have one thing in common: we love writing! We write all the articles, concerning culture around Groningen, you find on this blog, have biweekly meetings and brainstorm together.

First of, we have the only male of the group, Radu! He is 21 years old and from Romania, studying photography, film and mixed media. His interests are history, old movies, music, art and technology. In his free time he enjoys doing bike trips in the warm weather, going to the cinema and dancing. Fun fact, in the Slavic language his name means ‘happy’.

In the middle is Alica, an international communication student, born and raised in Germany. She follows her life based on the quote “coffee makes everything better”. Her goal in life is to inspire people and to get inspired by the world! She loves to spend time with people from various cultures to explore and learn from. Life goals: traveling, exploring and living. She is passionate about writing – all the time, about everything. She believes that writing is the greatest art to express thoughts and deepest feelings.

Left from Alica is Cécile. She is from the Netherlands in the last year of the American Studies program at the University of Groningen. She joined the editorial team last October and has enjoyed being a part of it ever since! She finds it nice to work with such a diverse group of people and discuss contemporary issues and events in and outside Groningen. Right now she is busy with her thesis, and this June she will be finished her studies in Groningen. She will then go to the United States for her studies!

On the far left is Mihaela, a media studies student from Moldova who came to Groningen to start her bachelors and build an independent life for herself. What she didn’t expect was to find a small city full of stories and experiences of thousands of internationals bringing their culture from all around the world. What she enjoys most is traveling, thinking that is the best way of getting a grasp of reality and becoming what her mother wants her to be: mature. When her budget doesn’t allow traveling, she loves long conversations with internationals, getting amazed of their life stories. Fun fact, last spring she went on a weekend trip to 3 countries where she missed 2 buses, the hotel reservation and she also got robbed, but at least she got more mature!

Next to Radu is Karlijn. Karlijn is a professional daydreamer, story junk and student communication and multimedia design. She loves every form of there is of stories: books, plays, music, film, and especially the real deal: culture. During her free hours, she likes to explore new places, photography, writing, and trying to pretend she’s a brilliant guitar player. She takes joy out of the little things: like drinking a good cup of coffee or tea. Since these are the only substances she lives on, every day is joyful. Karlijn is from the Netherlands and also write columns for HanzeMag and her own blog.

Far right we have Charlotte. She is a (German) student European Languages and Cultures. So not surprisingly – she loves discovering different languages, learning about them, as well as learning from them. When she’s not hyperventilating over someone speaking Basque or listening to bad detective story audio-books for children, she pretty much enjoys doing all the cliche stuff. The typical ‘I love travelling, cooking (especially the eating part), swimming and hiking’. She had to ask friends for some fun facts: 1) Charlotte is very clumsy. Sad but true, she is very talented at spilling stuff, breaking things and being awkward in general. 2) Charlotte is always cooking or eating something with garlic or drinking wine. Yes, she deeply loves and cherishes these two God given things. Fact is: there is always time for a glass of wine, cause in vino veritas!

Not pictured is our other Charlotte. She is a 23 year old communications student from the Netherlands. At the moment, she is busy working on her thesis. The little spare time she got left she likes to use to catch up on some sleep. She also enjoys museums, music, movies and gin tonics. She is a proud Netflix addict. An addiction she likes to combine with food. You can wake her up in the middle of the night for pizza, sushi and pretty much everything else. She also adores animals, she can’t meet a dog or cat without trying to pet them.

The editorial team is coordinated by Dorinda of the Executive Board of Usva.
