Usva’s five: week 48 & 49

With so many great cultural events in Groningen, how do you choose? We have the solution! Every two weeks, we outline 5 of the best events to attend. Here’s what’s up in week 48 and week 49:

1 Exposition World Press Photo Groningen
What: The World Press Photo exposition travels all over the world, and Groningen is one of a hundred cities where the event will  be hosted. Usva’s Executive Board went to the official opening on 19 November, and we were moved by the impressive press photos of both big and small events from the past year. We can certainly recommend taking one of the guided tours for €1. Want to know more about what we thought of the exposition? Keep an eye on this site for a report of the opening last Thursday.

When: 20 November (opening) until 13 December
Where: Der Aa-Kerk, Groningen
Price: €7 (regular price); €5 for students; €3 for children aged 4-12
More info: http://wpfgroningen.nl/

2 Course presentations
What: Usva’s course presentations are coming up, during which course members will show what they’ve achieved during the 10-week courses! These presentations are not just for proud parents and friends, they also provide a good opportunity for those interested in taking a course to see what the level is and what the courses entail exactly.  We’ll kick off with the Jazz Combo presentation on Monday 30 November. But this is just the beginning, because there are plenty of other courses that have a presentation, including Improv (Comedy), Musical Choir, Singing Solo Together, Acting Class and Korte Verhalen (Dutch). Check out www.usva.nl/agenda for details on dates, times and prices.

When: Monday 30 November – Friday 4 December
Where: Differs
Price: Differs (some presentations are free of charge, some require a small entrance fee)

3 DIFF + The Blind Roofers
What: Expect folk, Americana, rock, blues, and everything in between from both DIFF and The Blind Roofers at Simplon. Leeuwarden-based band DIFF are on the road to fame with 5 pre-shows for Dutch band De Dijk and a performance in De Wereld Draait Door, and now it’s time to release their first full debut album. If the music isn’t enough, then come for the home-made beer and food they’ll be bringing. And it’s certainly worth it to arrive in time, because Groningen-based band The Blind Roofers will be opening the evening.

When: Friday 27 November, starts at 20.30
Where: Simplon
Price: €8 (presale); €9 for tickets at the door
More info: www.simplon.nl

 4 Laarman’s Lab
What: There’s a reason why designer Joris Laarman’s art studio is called the Lab: his art works are inspired by the latest technological and scientific innovations. This means he designs (among other things) furniture in an unexpected and unconventional way. At the Groninger Museum, some of Laarman’s designs, or inventions, will be displayed. So expect 3D-chairs, chairs created through the use of algorithms,  lamps made of genetically modified material, and much more. And because the Groninger Museum is currently breaking down and setting up new expositions and therefore part of the museum is not accessible for visitors, students can visit the museum for free until 10 December.

When: 22 November 2015 – 10 April 2016
Where: Groninger Museum
Price: Free for students until 10 December, regular price €6 until 10 December

5 Het Torentje (Jonge Harten theaterfestival)
This event will be in Dutch.

Waar: Usva-theater (Munnekeholm 10)
Prijs: €8,50 (bezoekers onder de 30 jaar), €11 reguliere prijs
